A closer look
This is a hand-formed round leather tray, or valet dish, cut from a single circular piece of heavy full-grain cowhide and shaped into a shallow bowl by drawing up the perimeter and locking the folds in place. The interior presents the smooth grain side of the hide in a deep, saturated black with a soft semi-gloss sheen that catches light along the curved walls and shows subtle tonal variation, shifting from true black in the recesses to a faint warm charcoal-brown where light grazes the surface. Because the leather is a tea-core (core-dyed contrast) type, the black surface layer sits over a natural brown core, so the cut edges and any future scuffs will reveal a lighter tan-brown beneath. The base material is specified as full-grain (top-layer) cowhide with a hide thickness of approximately 3.6 to 4 millimeters, giving the walls a stiff, self-supporting body that holds its rounded form without collapsing.
Centrally stamped into the interior floor is a deeply embossed oval maker's mark for Horween leather, pressed cleanly into the grain with crisp, well-defined lettering and a uniform deboss depth that reads clearly under raking light. Around the upper arc of the oval runs the legend FINEST QUALITY LEATHERS, with a small registered-trademark symbol set to the right; across the center, HORWEEN appears in large serif capitals with strong thick-thin stroke contrast and flared serifs; beneath it sits a small banner-and-shield crest graphic carrying the words CHICAGO and USA; and along the lower arc is the legend SINCE 1905. The stamp sits flush and centered, with no crushing or double-strike halo, and the surrounding grain shows fine natural pore texture and faint growth marks consistent with an uncorrected top surface.
The construction is minimal and mechanical rather than stitched: each side of the bowl wall is formed by folding the leather over itself, and these folds are pinned by slotted Chicago-screw-style brass fasteners, four in total, evenly spaced around the rim. The screw heads on the interior are smooth, domed, and polished in a warm golden brass tone, while the reverse view shows the flat slotted brass screw heads seated against the folded leather, with one showing a slight darkening of the leather around it. The use of removable screw hardware means the assembly can be taken apart, and the absence of thread eliminates any stitching lines, keeping the silhouette clean and the design rugged and utilitarian.
