Golden Rutilated Quartz Freeform Crystal 59g
- Softly rounded quadrilateral slab with eased, radiused corners
- Dense golden rutile needles forming fan and mesh patterns
- Polished to a soft waxy sheen, not mirror gloss
Type: Free-form golden rutilated quartz crystal specimen
Dimensions: about 1.77 x 1.21 in (4.5 x 3.07 cm)
Thickness: about 0.59 in (1.51 cm)
Weight: 59 g
Materials: Natural quartz with rutile needle inclusions
Finish: Smooth low-to-medium gloss, soft waxy sheen, translucent to semi-transparent
It comes unmounted, so it can be held, displayed on a small stand, or carried as a pocket stone. Roughly palm-sized, it sits comfortably between the fingers and pairs well with other natural specimens.
Displaying in a mineral or crystal collection
Observing rutile needle patterns under light
Meditation or pocket-companion use
A natural accent on a shelf or desk
Wipe with a soft dry cloth to lift dust and fingerprints.
Store apart from harder stones to limit surface micro-scratches.
Handle by the edges to keep polished faces clear of oils.
Hand-shaped into its free-form slab, so slight differences in outline, thickness, and needle pattern are natural.

A closer look
This specimen is a free-form, hand-shaped piece of golden rutilated quartz, presented as a single solid crystal slab rather than a faceted gem or a polished cabochon in a conventional cab shape. Its silhouette is an irregular, softly rounded quadrilateral slab: one long edge is gently convex, the two shorter ends taper with slightly different angles, and the opposing long edge carries a subtle inward curve, giving the piece an organic, pebble-like asymmetry while still reading broadly as a rectangular bar. Corners are all smoothly eased rather than sharp, and the entire outline is finished with a consistent, softly radiused contour.
The material is natural quartz hosting abundant golden rutilated needle inclusions, commonly known as rutilated quartz or golden hair quartz. In transmitted light the body of the crystal is a warm, luminous honey-amber to golden-orange, with the strongest saturation concentrated where the inclusions are densest and a paler, more translucent golden-yellow glow spreading toward the thinner edges. Under diffuse ambient light the surface reads as a deeper tawny, caramel-to-bronze gold with darker reddish-brown banding where the rutile needles cluster together. The surface is polished to a smooth, low-to-medium gloss with a soft waxy sheen rather than a mirror-like, high-clarity finish; tiny surface micro-scratches and faint polish lines are visible, consistent with natural stone handling and repeated handling during measurement.
Microscopically, the interior is dominated by dense, thread-like rutile needles running in multiple intersecting directions. In some areas the needles align in sweeping, feathery, straw-like fans that flare outward from concentrated origins, creating a shimmering, chatoyant, sunburst effect as the viewing angle changes. In other areas the needles crisscross into a fine, chaotic mesh resembling bristles of a brush, so the density of gold increases toward the center of the slab and thins slightly at the margins. Faint natural internal characteristics are present, including subtle wispy cottony veils and very fine internal fracture planes that catch and scatter the light, as is typical of natural rutilated quartz. There are no visible drilled holes, settings, metalwork, carvings, or applied coatings; the piece is an unmounted crystal specimen.
The piece weighs 59 grams. Precisely measured with calipers, the longest dimension is 45.0 millimeters, the second dimension is 30.7 millimeters, and the thickness is 15.1 millimeters, yielding an approximate volume consistent with its reported mass and a solid, substantial feel in hand. The thickness tapers slightly toward the edges while the central body retains the fullest 15.1 millimeter depth, so the slab has a gently convex, lens-like fullness when held and examined from the side. These figures give a compact, palm-sized specimen that sits comfortably between the fingers.
The stone appears translucent to semi-transparent throughout, and it responds strongly to light passing through it: when backlit, the golden body turns to a brilliant, fiery orange-yellow and the rutile needles throw sharp, bright linear highlights and delicate shadow streaks across the interior.
