Handmade Faceted Black Clay Planter
- Raised polygon panels separated by deep chiseled channels and striated bands
- Unglazed walls stay open-porous, allowing air and moisture exchange
- Jagged sawtooth rim follows angular facets; flat base with drainage
Type: Handmade clay planter
Materials: Pottery clay, unglazed, high-fired
Finish / color: Matte charcoal gray to near-black
The interior is smoother and more evenly curved than the carved exterior, so it sits comfortably around a live plant. It pairs naturally with other matte, dark-toned ceramics and woven or wooden surfaces.
A windowsill or shelf accent for small leafy plants
A tabletop piece in a living room or study
A textural counterpoint to smooth glazed pots
A quiet, sculptural object on a desk or entryway
Rinse with lukewarm water; avoid soap and harsh cleaners
Wipe the exterior gently, as unglazed clay can absorb oils
Let it dry fully before potting and store padded in a dry place
Each piece is hand-built, so panel shapes, groove depth, and rim points vary slightly from one vessel to the next.

A closer look
This vessel is a handmade clay planter, hand-formed from pottery clay and finished with high-temperature firing. Its body is completely unglazed, leaving the raw fired clay exposed so that the material remains open-porous and highly breathable — a functional quality well suited to holding live plants and allowing air and moisture exchange through the walls. The clay body is a dark charcoal gray to near-black tone, fired to a matte, low-sheen surface with no glassy coating anywhere on the exterior or interior.
The silhouette is an angular, faceted cylinder tapering slightly from a wider, unevenly cut mouth down to a flat circular base, with the outer walls built up from raised, sharply planed geometric panels rather than a smooth thrown curve. Each panel is a distinct polygon — quadrilaterals, triangles, and irregular lozenges — pressed proud of the surface and separated by deep, chiseled channels and ridged, striated bands of closely spaced parallel incisions that wrap around the vessel in crossing diagonal and horizontal directions. These incised line groups run in dense parallel sets of roughly a dozen or more grooves, creating a woven or lattice-like relief that alternates between smooth, flat, bevel-edged facets and rough, textured, tool-marked crevices, giving the piece an organic, hand-built, sculptural character rather than a machine-finished one.
The surface texture is granular and tactile: tiny mineral specks and grit particles — light, whitish flecks and occasional reddish-brown iron specks — are scattered throughout the dark body, consistent with grogged or iron-bearing clay, and are visible both on the smooth facets and inside the carved grooves. Color shifts subtly across the piece, from a deep matte black in recessed channels to a lighter charcoal gray on the raised faces where the matte surface catches light with only a faint, soft luster. The mouth edge is deliberately irregular, following the angular peaks of the carved facets into small jagged, sawtooth-like points around the rim, while the interior walls are smoother and more evenly curved than the exterior relief.
The base is finished with a clean, flat circular foot ring surrounding a distinct circular drainage opening at the center, confirming its use as a plant pot with built-in drainage. Seen
