A closer look
This pendant necklace set centers on a round, domed cabochon of natural Mexican Peanut Obsidian, a material first discovered near Alamos in the state of Sonora, Mexico, in the 1960s. Despite its trade name, the stone is not a true obsidian but a perlite containing spherulites: radial, flower-like or circular crystalline formations of feldspar charged with hematite. When cut and polished, these spherulites reveal a captivating inner glow that heightens the stone's naturally beautiful spherical patterning. The dark ground of the cabochon reads primarily as deep black, softened in areas by smoky gray banding and veining, across which numerous rounded, peanut-shaped spherulite inclusions float in warm red-orange tones. In the photographed piece, the upper portion of the disc displays a cluster of these overlapping circular forms in terracotta and apricot hues with faint pale veining, while the lower zone shifts to a mossier, grayish-olive matrix webbed with fine dark lines, giving the face an organic, landscape-like division of color.
The stone is framed by a densely hand-woven bead bezel built up in multiple concentric rows. Small metallic bronze-gold seed beads alternate with dark garnet-red and blackened metallic cylindrical beads, creating a rhythmic, tiled texture that wraps fully around the edge of the cabochon and gives the piece a substantial, slightly raised rim. The beadwork continues over the side wall of the pendant in even, brick-like courses, demonstrating tight, uniform stitching and consistent tension throughout. A simple dark gunmetal-toned bail loop sits at the top of the bezel, oriented perpendicular to the face, providing a clean suspension point for the strand.
Along the lower arc of the pendant hangs a fringe of five dangling charms, each built from a dark metallic spacer bead, a translucent amber-orange glass flower bud with flared, petal-like lobes and a shimmering copper or golden luster finish, and a small terminal bead beneath. The center charm drops a glossy deep ruby-red round bead, while the remaining four finish in metallic copper-bronze rounds, creating a subtle gradient across the fringe. These glass elements have the glossy, slightly irregular character of lamp-worked or hand-formed glass, with visible swirls and a warm autumnal palette that echoes the red-orange spherulites in the stone above.
The matching long chain is composed of cylindrical, column-shaped bloodstone beads, whose vermilion red coloring pairs naturally with the Mexican Peanut Obsidian. Each tube bead shows mottled jasper patterning: brick red and rust zones blend with translucent gray, milky white, and occasional greenish-gray patches, some speckled with fine dark spotting and hairline cracks characteristic of the natural stone. Between the stone cylinders sit small flattened disc spacers in dark metallic gray, black, and pale gray, interspersed with tiny polished brass-toned accent beads, producing a measured, repeating rhythm along the full
