Unglazed Black Ceramic Vessel with Ribbed Texture
- Horizontal ribbing wraps the full circumference from rim to foot
- Cream, ivory, and pale tan mineral grit speckles the clay
- Crack lines and gouges break the surface into apparent shards
Type: Ceramic vessel
Thickness / depth: Substantial thick base wall
Materials: Unglazed clay with fine mineral inclusions
Finish / color: Unglazed matte; charcoal black to warm dark gray
Dimensions / Size: Rounded central opening about 2 to 2.4 in (5–6 cm) across
Display it as a sculptural object on a shelf or table, where raking light catches the ridge crests and fractured edges. It pairs naturally with other matte, unglazed ceramics. The opening is roughly a few fingers wide, and the uneven rim sits at varying heights.
A quiet centerpiece for a console or studio shelf.
Works alongside neutral stoneware and dark wood.
Suited to calm, textural interior styling.
An easy companion to dried stems or left empty.
Dust with a soft dry cloth.
Keep away from harsh cleaners and abrasives.
Handle the jagged rim and base gently when moving.
This piece is handmade, so small variations in ribbing, speckling, and rim shape are part of its character.

A closer look
This is a hand-built ceramic vessel crafted from unglazed clay, high-temperature fired, with a surface that carries the tactile record of its making. The body is wheel-thrown or coil-built with pronounced horizontal ribbing—regular concentric ridges that wrap the full circumference from rim to foot, varying slightly in spacing and depth so the texture reads as rhythmic rather than mechanical. The finish is completely unglazed, presenting a dry, matte, almost stony surface rather than a glossy sheen; light is absorbed rather than reflected, catching only on the crests of the ridges and along the fractured edges.
The color is a deep, sooty charcoal black shading into warm dark gray, with subtle tonal variation across the body: cooler graphite tones on the shadowed left side, warmer gray-brown where light grazes the ridges, and dense near-black pooling in the recesses. The clay body is visibly speckled with fine mineral inclusions—tiny cream, ivory, and pale tan grit scattered across the surface—giving a granular, sand-like texture that signals a coarse, iron-rich clay body fired without a glaze coat.
The form is deliberately deconstructed and asymmetrical. The rim is jagged and irregular, broken into uneven plates at varying heights with torn, chipped edges, so the opening never resolves into a level circle. Deep, wide crack lines cut vertically and diagonally through the ribbed surface, branching like lightning across the front face and continuing around the body, separating the vessel into apparent shards. The silhouette undulates: the wall pinches inward toward the middle third, then flares slightly outward again toward the foot, giving the piece a soft, compressed hourglass profile rather than a strict cylinder. Small pinholes and tiny unfired-looking voids dot the surface, and several larger gouges interrupt the ridged pattern.
Seen from above and below, the vessel is not a closed pot. The underside reveals a substantial thick base wall with a rounded, organic opening cut through the center, roughly five to six centimeters across, exposing the interior cavity; the base ring itself is uneven, with raised lobes and notched sections where the
