A closer look
This is a handcrafted ceramic vessel made from hand-formed clay clay and finished with high-temperature firing, left completely unglazed so the natural porous surface remains breathable and open-textured. The material reads as a raw, sandy stoneware body: matte, granular, and slightly coarse to the touch, with fine grog specks and pinprick pores scattered across the surface rather than any glossy coating, glaze film, or reflective sheen. The unglazed treatment gives the piece a dry, earthy tactility with visible throwing and pinching ridges circling the form.
The color palette is a restrained two-tone scheme: warm chalky off-white to pale oatmeal bands alternating with deep speckled charcoal-brown to dark umber bands. The dark sections show tiny lighter mineral inclusions embedded in the clay body, giving them a granite-like mottled appearance, while the light bands carry faint warm cream and grey undertones. The boundary between the two tones is intentionally irregular and hand-applied, with edges that feather and break up rather than running as perfectly crisp lines.
The silhouette is a squat, softly swelling drum shape with an open circular mouth, a rounded belly at its widest point near the lower middle, and a tapering rounded base. The profile carries a series of gentle horizontal undulations and concentric ridges that wrap fully around the body, creating a ribbed, layered rhythm that shifts in depth from view to view; some dark bands read wide and dominant while others break into thin stacked pinstripes. The rim is thick, slightly uneven, and softly rolled, with a chalky, weathered edge that reinforces the handmade character. No handles, spouts, feet, hardware, engravings, printed marks, or logos appear on the piece.
From the underside view, the vessel rests on a raised circular ring foot that mirrors the banded pattern of the body, leaving a recessed annular base with a central circular opening leading into the hollow interior. The interior walls continue the same raw, unglazed, porous texture and greyish-brown clay tone, confirming the body is open throughout and free of any interior glaze layer. The concentric construction rings are clearly visible from below, evidencing the hand-built or coil-formed process and the deliberate retention of surface tooling marks.
In terms of documented measurements, a measuring tape placed across the opening indicates an overall outer diameter in the range of roughly 8 to 9 centimeters at the widest point of the mouth, with the inner opening measuring approximately 6 to 7 centimeters across. A tape held vertically against the body places the total height at approximately 9 centimeters, measured from the base contact point to the top edge of the rim. The wall thickness, as visible at the rim and from the underside opening, appears substantial and consistent, supporting the vessel's small, compact, handheld scale, which is confirmed by images of the piece held between a person's fingers and thumb, fitting comfortably within a single adult
