A closer look
This is a handmade unglazed clay vessel, crafted from natural clay and fired at high temperature. The piece has no glaze coating, leaving a raw, breathable surface. It is a small cylindrical container, functioning most naturally as a planter, with a single drainage hole in its base. The fired clay body appears dense and matte, with no gloss or surface sheen anywhere on the piece.
The form is a near-cylinder with a very slight taper, narrower at the base than at the rim. The exterior walls carry a continuous pattern of fine horizontal ridges or turning grooves that wrap all the way around the circumference, giving the surface a corded, almost coiled texture. The coloring consists of alternating horizontal bands: broad sections of deep charcoal-black clay alternating with narrower stripes of warm reddish-brown terracotta. The boundary between the two colors is not sharply ruled but follows the ridges, so the red areas break up and fade into the dark bands. Scattered across the surface are tiny pale mineral flecks, occasional small pinholes, and faint ochre-colored specks where the clay body shows through, consistent with an unglazed, granular earthenware texture.
Measured against the steel ruler in the images, the vessel stands approximately 5.5 cm in height. The outer diameter measures roughly 8 cm across the widest point of the rim, while the inner opening measures around 4 cm across, indicating substantial wall thickness of approximately 1 to 1.5 cm at the rim. The base disc is slightly thicker than the walls. The bottom carries concentric turned ridges matching the exterior texture, a centrally placed drainage hole about 2 cm in diameter, and one irregular notch or protruding tab cut into the outer edge of the base, a characteristic byproduct of hand forming and hand cutting.
The interior wall is unglazed as well, showing the same dark charcoal clay body with reddish streaks following the horizontal ridges, and the interior of the central drainage hole is visible from the bottom view. The rim is flat-topped and roughly level, with the layered edge of the fired clay exposed. Surface quality is intentionally rustic: the finish is even across the body, but the visible grit, micro-pitting, and color variation are inherent to the raw clay rather than defects.
The overall aesthetic is earthy,
