A closer look
This item is a small framed botanical specimen designed as a fridge magnet, centered on a dried pitcher plant (Nepenthes) trap preserved in natural form. The piece is presented in a rectangular wooden frame with clearly visible mitred corner joints, where the grain lines of each rail angle diagonally to meet at clean, well-fitted 45-degree seams. The wood shows a pronounced linear grain with fine darker striations running lengthwise along the top, bottom, and side members, finished in a warm golden-brown to medium chestnut tone that shifts toward amber where the light catches the flat faces. The surface appears smooth with a soft low sheen rather than a high gloss, and the frame's moulding has a subtly stepped profile, with a slightly raised outer edge and a recessed inner lip that creates a narrow shadow line around the opening.
Set inside the frame is a flat, even black backing panel with a matte, non-reflective finish that provides strong contrast and makes the specimen stand out visually. The plant is mounted in a floating style, mounted forward from the backing so that it occupies the depth of the frame opening, and it extends nearly the full interior height of the panel. The pitcher body is elongated and pendant, tapering from a rounded, slightly flattened lower base toward a narrower top opening, giving it a smooth ovoid to tubular silhouette that is gently curved rather than perfectly straight along its axis.
The dried pitcher displays a rich natural color gradient, beginning with a deep maroon and berry-red across the upper and middle body, blending into dusty rose and muted plum near the rim, and warming to golden-orange and tan tones at the tapered lower tip. Its surface is matte and papery in appearance, with a network of fine branching veins visible across the skin, creating a delicate reticulated texture. Running down the front of the pitcher are two prominent raised wing ridges, each edged with a row of fine, hair-like bristles that are pale in color and clearly visible against the darker flesh. These wings converge toward the base, following the pitcher's taper.
At the top, the pitcher opens into a thickened, rolled rim with a ridged or finely ribbed texture, forming a defined collar around the mouth. Above and slightly behind the opening sits the dried lid, a small, folded, reddish-brown leaf-like flap that has curled back and upward. A slender, stiff tendril extends upward from the attachment point of the pitcher, rising vertically and passing beyond the inner edge of the frame opening, with its pale tan, straw-like surface contrasting against the dark backing. The tendril is thin and wiry, maintaining a consistent diameter along most of its length.
The whole piece is compact enough to be held comfortably between the thumb and fingers of one hand, indicating a palm-sized object with the frame width roughly comparable to the span of a few fingers and the frame depth measuring a few times the thickness of the frame rails, giving it the boxy profile of a shallow shadow-box style frame.
