A closer look
This handmade ceramic plate is crafted from jade clay, a fine-grained ceramic body that yields a smooth, dense, and slightly translucent white surface with a cool, milky undertone. The piece is finished with a high-temperature underglaze technique, resulting in a glassy, highly reflective gloss coating that pools slightly around the raised decorative elements and catches sharp specular highlights. The overall form is a shallow, wide-rimmed round dish with gently flared walls and a low, stable foot ring, giving it a balanced, open profile suitable for serving fruit, snacks, or as a tea tray base. The underside is left plain white with a clean, unglazed foot edge, while the interior wall carries a few small, scattered floral accents in mustard yellow, coral orange, and dusty pink, each outlined in fine white slip.
The central decorative field is a dense, all-over "millefleurs" or ten-thousand-flower composition, hand-painted in a three-dimensional relief style. Each blossom is built up with raised white slip outlines that create a tactile, cloisonne-like network of fine ridges, giving the surface a subtle embossed texture beneath the glossy glaze. The floral motifs include stylized chrysanthemums, peonies, daisies, and small five-petal blossoms, rendered in a soft pastel palette of blush pink, powder blue, butter yellow, apricot orange, lavender, and pale mint. Colors are applied as translucent washes that fade from saturated centers to near-white petal tips, creating gentle gradients and a luminous, watercolor-like depth. The flowers overlap and interlock across the entire inner well, with no visible background gaps, producing a rich, tapestry-like effect.
The relief work is executed with considerable precision: petal edges are crisply defined by the raised white lines, flower centers are marked with tiny dots or rings of contrasting glaze, and small star-shaped filler motifs in yellow and white bridge the spaces between larger blooms. The glaze surface is uniform and free of crazing, with only a few tiny dark specks visible on the rim and interior wall, consistent with the natural character of the clay body. The rim itself is smooth and evenly rounded, with a consistent thickness throughout, and the transition from the decorated well to the plain outer wall is clean and well-defined. The foot ring is neatly trimmed and slightly recessed, providing a stable base and a subtle shadow line when the plate is set down.
In terms of scale, the plate is held comfortably in one hand, indicating a diameter roughly in the range of a standard serving or fruit dish, with a shallow depth that keeps contents accessible while still containing them. The walls rise at a moderate angle from the base, and the wide rim offers a generous border that frames the central floral field. The glossy glaze interacts strongly with ambient light, producing bright, elongated highlights along the rim and inner wall, while the raised relief lines cast delicate micro-shadows that enhance the three-dimensional reading of the pattern. The overall aesthetic blends traditional Chinese ceramic decoration with a contemporary, soft-toned palette, resulting in a piece that is both ornamental and functional.
