A closer look
This handmade A6-format journal cover is constructed from full-grain cowhide, featuring a double-layer leather construction that is bonded face-to-face for a substantial, structured feel. The exterior leather presents a deep, dark burgundy or oxblood shade with a smooth, semi-matte finish that exhibits a subtle natural sheen under direct light. The surface texture is fine and even, showing the characteristic tight grain of top-layer hide without heavy artificial embossing. The interior lining is composed of sheepskin, which appears in a contrasting warm tan or caramel brown tone with a softer, more velvety nap compared to the exterior cowhide. The two-tone color scheme creates a refined visual contrast between the dark outer shell and the lighter inner panels.
The cover is designed in a classic traveler's notebook style with a wrap-around closure system. A wide leather strap extends from the back cover and wraps around the front, securing with a polished silver-tone metal snap button. The strap is finished with rounded ends and features the same tan contrast stitching seen throughout the piece. The stitching is executed in a warm golden-tan thread, applied in a consistent saddle-stitch pattern along all edges, pockets, and the closure strap. The stitch density is regular and tight, with each stitch sitting evenly within a slightly recessed groove, indicating careful hand-finishing. The edges of the leather panels are burnished and sealed, showing a smooth, darkened finish that prevents fraying and adds to the refined appearance.
The interior layout includes multiple functional storage elements. On the inside front cover, there is a large slip pocket with a diagonal cut opening, allowing easy access to inserted cards or papers. A similar pocket is mirrored on the inside back cover. Along the inner spine, a dedicated pen loop is stitched into place, sized to hold a standard writing instrument securely. The central binding mechanism consists of a six-ring silver-tone metal binder, which allows for the insertion and removal of A6-sized paper refills. The rings are polished chrome with a smooth, reflective surface, and the binder spine is mounted on a reinforced leather panel that matches the exterior color. The binder mechanism is positioned centrally, flanked by the tan sheepskin lining panels on either side.
A distinctive decorative element is the gourd-shaped leather bookmark included with the journal. The bookmark is cut from the same dark burgundy leather as the exterior cover and is suspended from a braided olive-green cord. The cord is knotted at the top and threaded through a small hole in the bookmark, allowing it to hang freely from the binder rings. The gourd silhouette features a rounded lower body and a narrower upper section, creating a traditional calabash form. The bookmark's edges are cleanly cut and lightly burnished, matching the overall finishing quality of the cover.
The overall proportions follow the A6 standard, with the closed cover presenting a compact, portable rectangular form with slightly rounded corners. The spine width accommodates the ring binder mechanism while maintaining a slim profile when closed. The double-layer leather construction adds thickness and rigidity, ensuring the cover retains its shape over time. The combination of full-grain cowhide exterior, sheepskin interior lining, hand-stitched construction, and functional ring binding creates a durable and versatile journal cover suitable for daily writing, planning, and note-taking use.
