A closer look
The item is a softcover journal case cut to the A5 format, the standard international sheet size of 148 millimeters in width by 210 millimeters in height, designed to hold a fixed-page A5 notebook insert. Both the front and back panels are cut from South African ostrich leather, a full-grain hide whose signature raised quill follicles form a dense, evenly distributed pattern of rounded bumps across the entire exterior surface. Each follicle is a smooth, slightly domed nodule surrounded by a fine network of natural grain creases, giving the panel a pebbled yet supple texture that reads as softly matte where light spreads across it and more lustrous on the polished crests of the quills.
The colour is a two-tone denim blue executed as an antique or pull-up finish rather than a flat pigment. The leather body carries a pale, chalky mid-blue base while the recesses between the quills and the fine crackle lines darken to a deeper slate navy, producing a mottled, weathered effect that varies continuously across the hide. Under raking light the quill heads catch bright silver-blue highlights, the surrounding flat areas hold a soft satin sheen, and the creased valleys fall into cool indigo shadow, so the surface shifts tone as it is turned. The elastic loop, the closure tab and the interior panels repeat the same denim-blue palette, keeping the whole piece visually unified.
Construction is defined by a continuous hand saddle stitch that runs around the perimeter of both covers, set roughly three millimeters in from the edge in a cream or pale bone thread. The stitches are short, slightly slanted, evenly tensioned and paired lock by lock, characteristic of hand sewing rather than machine work; the thread is waxed and sits in shallow grooves pressed into the leather, and the stitch line follows the rounded corners without stepping or drift. The panel edges are trimmed clean
