Small Fluted Stoneware Vessel
The light, heavily grogged clay is left unglazed and matte across most of the body, speckled with fine minerals in pale bone, oatmeal and off-white tones that shift from warm cream to cooler grey-white in the recesses. A glossy dark brown glaze pools and drips along the uneven, scalloped rim, thinning into caramel and olive tones, with a few pooled beads lower on the exterior.
- Bold vertical flutes form a scalloped, wave-like silhouette
- Dry matte surface with fine mineral speckles and faint pinch marks
- Raked diagonal lines texture the recessed channels

A closer look
This object is a small hand-pinched coarse stoneware vessel, formed from a light-colored, heavily grogged clay body that has been fired at high temperature. The clay surface is left unglazed across most of the body, presenting a dry, matte, granular texture with fine mineral speckles scattered through the pale bone, oatmeal and off-white tones; the color shifts subtly from warm cream in the lit areas to a cooler grey-white in the recesses. The grainy, open quality of the surface is consistent throughout, with small irregularities and faint tool and finger marks characteristic of hand-built pinch construction rather than wheel throwing or casting.
The exterior is organized into a series of bold vertical flutes or ridges that run from the base to the rim in soft, undulating S-curves, giving the piece a scalloped, wave-like profile in silhouette. Each ridge alternates between a raised convex crest and a recessed concave channel, creating a rhythmic, organic symmetry that is only approximate rather than geometrically precise, which is consistent with freehand pinching. Some of the recessed channels are marked with delicate diagonal striations or raked hatching lines, like fine scratches raked into the damp clay, while the raised ridges remain smoother and more even.
Along the rim, a thick glossy glaze has been allowed to pool and drip down the upper edge, producing a lustrous dark brown to near-black band with softer caramel, olive and amber transitions where the glaze thins. The rim itself is uneven and scalloped, with the wavy ridges cresting into pointed lobes and dipping into soft valleys, so the top edge reads as a natural, organic contour rather than a level circle. Small islands of this same glossy dark brown glaze appear as pooled droplets or beads on the exterior surface, concentrated
